'The more I play, the better I'll become': Dewald Brevis reflects on Test debut dream

The 22-year-old announced himself in style with a composed 51 in his maiden innings at Queens Sports Club, helping the Proteas to a commanding 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe. He followed up with scores of 3 and 30, and even chipped in with his first Test wicket.

"It was very special," Brevis told SportsBoom.co.za. "The half-century was a great moment, but what made it even more meaningful was just being part of the playing XI and winning the series. I soaked in every second."

While he had previously toured with the Proteas squad in Bangladesh without featuring, the experience in Zimbabwe marked the realisation of a long-held dream - confirmed the moment he received his baggy green cap.

"It's still sitting right next to me on my desk," he said. "That cap means everything. It's a symbol of hard work and belief - and I can't wait to see where the journey goes from here."

Better known for his aggressive white-ball batting, Brevis welcomed the challenge of Test cricket and the different mindset it demands. Though Zimbabwe's bowlers adjusted well in the second match, he remains confident in his ability to grow.

"I've learned that no matter how well you've done, there's always room to improve," he said. "That's what I love about this game - it keeps you grounded. Whether you're 22 or 32, there's always another level to reach."

His goal now is clear: earn a permanent spot in South Africa's full-strength Test side, and evolve his red-ball game without losing his natural flair.

"For me, it's about staying true to who I am, but also learning when to slow things down, when to be patient. There were a few small errors, but I know the more I play, the better I'll become."
