Fashion designer David Tlale said he doesn’t think Gayton McKenzie understands the complexities of the clothing and textile industry.

Q: Why did you both decide to collaborate?
Anderson: For me, design has always been about breaking Boundaries and reimagining what’s possible. I saw in Idera’s work the same fearlessness — a raw honesty in how she expresses culture, fashion, and identity. It felt natural that we come together to push this dialogue further. Idera: I think our pairing is about alignment. We’re different in our mediums but similar in our values — sustainability, community, and storytelling. It wasn’t a forced collaboration; it was an inevitable one.
Q: What do design, fashion, and art mean when they intersect?
Idera: They become language. Fashion wears the story, Art captures the soul of it, and design gives it structure. Together, they speak to people in a way that words alone can’t. Anderson: Exactly. The intersection is where transformation happens — where you don’t just see or wear or enter a space, you experience it.
Q: Why the title Coalesce?
Anderson: Because it’s about merging without losing individuality. Our work doesn’t blur into sameness — it retains its distinct voice while forming something stronger as one. Idera: It’s also about Community. To coalesce is to come together — not just us as collaborators, but everyone who steps into the exhibition.
Q: How does sustainability shape your creative process?
Idera: For me, it’s about respect — for materials, for heritage, for the environment. Fashion should not be fleeting, it should be conscious. Anderson: Sustainability is my design backbone. Upcycling and reimagining waste isn’t just practical, it’s philosophical — it proves beauty doesn’t need excess.
Q: What impact do you hope this exhibition makes?
Anderson: That people leave questioning what creativity can do — not just in aesthetics, but in changing how we live, build, and connect. Idera: That they see themselves reflected — and realize art, fashion, and design are tools for inclusivity, Empowerment, and new ways of being.
