SADC region gearing up to host 45th ordinary summit heads of state
Southern African Development Community (SADC) region is getting ready to host its 45th ordinary summit heads of state and government this month in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
Alongside strong opposition in Lithuania and Poland, it was always going to be a tall order for Team SA in the 3x3 format.
Lithuania beat them 21-13 in the opener and Poland dominated play with a 21-11 victory, making it harder for Kweyama’s charges to find a way to the podium in what remains of the competition.
The coach says they are taking it in their stride.
"I think this is a great learning experience. We don't often come across these teams, and it shows that we still have a long way to go.
"Due to the fact that they play more than us throughout the year, countries like Poland and Lithuania have more match experience than South Africa. We also have a height mismatch, and this was exploited in both matches," elaborated Kweyama.
Kweyama says his job now is to encourage his group of players.
"We can really compete at this level if we focus our minds and hearts, and slowly but surely we will get to where we want to go."
To future student athletes watching the FISU Games with envy, Coach Kweyama suggested a formula that can get them there.
"To aspiring athletes, take your academics seriously because it's going to keep you out of trouble. Secondly, if you work hard, it will eventually pay off."
