Gayton McKenzie accused of not understanding fashion industry after his meeting with Shein
Fashion designer David Tlale said he doesn’t think Gayton McKenzie understands the complexities of the clothing and textile industry.
In an industry still largely dominated by men, Gugu Masunga — aka Gugu Da DJ — is making waves not just behind the decks, but by opening doors for others to shine too.
The Soshanguve-born DJ recently got nominated at the Hearts and Hustle awards in the Game Changer category. She is being celebrated for her unwavering dedication to uplifting fellow artists and transforming the local entertainment landscape.
Gugu Da DJ is all about uplifting DJs who are starting, especially women.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 27 in Pretoria North.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Gugu Da DJ said: “The fact that we are in a male-dominated industry makes this journey even more significant for me, I've stayed consistent in hosting events and creating opportunities for upcoming DJs and live performers to gain exposure. I especially want to give underrated DJs a platform to shine. For me, success is measured by the positive impact we have on others, not the accolades or material achievements, but the lives we've touched.”
Her nomination has stirred both gratitude and reflection.
“I'm humbled that someone out there has seen my dedication and the hard work I’ve put into my craft. Being considered for such an honour is a truly great feeling,” she adds.
And she's far from finished. With big plans in the pipeline, Gugu Da DJ is committed to using her platform to continue elevating others — especially women.
“I want to host more events that uplift women from all walks of life. One of my biggest dreams is to launch a workshop that educates and empowers DJs not just about the technical side of the craft, but the importance of branding, self-presentation and professionalism. Being a DJ is a full package, and it's time we all started seeing it that way.”
With her passion and purpose firmly aligned, it’s clear that Gugu Da DJ is more than just a DJ — she’s a movement — and she’s just getting started.
